Chapter

Twenty-One

The rapid and unrelenting pace of the fight was starting to wear Pandora out and her reaction time was slowing down. For every blow she landed, she took two in return. If this kept up much longer, I worried that she would get hurt. I took a few steps backwards, trying to put enough room between us so I could work a spell without hitting her. Unfortunately, I only made it about a foot when I backed into the wall.

Pandora and the hammer-wielding super orc were directly in front of me, and my left side was blocked by a large potted plant. When I tried to move to the right, Pandora stepped backwards into my path. With her now pinned against the wall as well, I knew I had to act fast. I reached into my front pocket and put a hand on Naja Haje's neck. "I could use a little help here."

"Of course, what did you have in mind?"

"How would you feel about biting a really big orc?"

The ancient cobra was partway through another one of his lectures on the proper use of magical gifts when someone grabbed me by the hood and yanked on it so hard that my feet came out from under me. I landed hard on my backside and looked up, ready to shield myself from another orc attack. I stopped panicking when I realized it was none other than Maggot who had manhandled me.

He muttered a quick apology, then clobbered the huge orc across the back of the head with a bo staff. How he'd gotten his hands on the staff was a mystery, but right now wasn't the best time to play Twenty Questions. I got to my feet and returned to preparing my spell, but I never got the chance to cast it.

The staff blow had caught the orc off guard. He spun himself, and the war hammer, around to face his new opponent. He raised the weapon above his head and was halfway through his downswing when he stopped and stammered, "E-Earl?"

An equally stunned Maggot stumbled back and gasped. "Oliver?"

Pandora snorted. "Wait. This is Ollie?"

Maggot's expression changed from shock to something I couldn't quite read. It was equal parts anger, surprise, and guilt. It didn't make sense. The two orcs remained perfectly still. They kept staring at each other until it started to feel a little awkward. I decided to break the tension by doing what I do best, asking an obviously stupid question. "So, I take it you two know each other?"

Oliver raised an eyebrow at Maggot as if daring him to be the first to answer. Maggot finally sighed and his shoulders sagged. "It's complicated."

Oliver's mouth dropped open, and he scoffed. "No. It was complicated. As in past tense. I gave you six years of my love, and you chose to walk out on me without so much as a goodbye. As far as I'm concerned, you are dead to me."

Maggot hung his head and a torrent of grief and regret sloshed out of him.
